ID apply for or renew

With a " ID ," you can prove your identity and travel to most countries in Europe. You can also use your " ID " to log in online to government services, educational institutions, the Health , and your pension fund.

To apply for, renew, or replace your ID , please make an appointment.

You must always apply for and pick up a “ ID ” in person. This also applies to children. Children 12 years of age and older may apply for and pick up a “ ID ” on their own.

Here's how it works

Request an " ID "

You must apply for your “ ID ” in person at the municipality where you live. Children applying for their own “ ID ” must also come to the municipality in person.

Have you lost your ID or has it been stolen? If so, please visit the page" ID —lost or stolen."

Replacing a ID

Has your ID expired or been severely damaged? If so, apply for a new one at ID . Turn in your old ID to your local municipality.

Physical or mental disability

If you are unable to come to City Hall in person due to a physical or mental disability, a city employee can come to your home.

To do so, please contact the municipality at 14 0181. If there is any doubt, the municipality may ask you to provide a medical certificate.

Traveling with children

Children need their own travel document. Children aged 12 and older may apply for and pick up a ID on their own.

ID card lost or stolen

Have you lost your ID in the Netherlands, or has it been stolen? If so, apply for a new one immediately at ID . When you apply, you’ll need to sign a statement reporting the loss. You do not need to file a police report. Are you insured against theft? If so, we recommend that you file a police report.

Have you lost your ID while abroad, or has it been stolen? If so, file a report with the local police and ask for written proof. Then contact the Dutch embassy or consulate at .

Rush application

Do you need your ID right away? If so, you can submit an expedited request.

If you submit your request for an “ ID ” before 2:00 p.m., you can usually pick it up the next business day after 10:00 a.m. In Rockanje, an expedited request takes at least 48 hours.

The expedited procedure takes up to 3 business days.

What do I need to bring to the application?

For your ID

  • Please bring a clear, recent passport-style photo that is no more than 6 months old at the time of application and meets the passport photo requirements at .
  • Please bring all passports and ID cards you still have, even if they have expired.
  • Please bring a debit card or cash. You'll pay right away when you submit your application. 

There are photo booths at the service desk in Rockanje and at the town hall in Hellevoetsluis. You can only make contactless payments at the photo booths. Do you have gray or light blond hair? If so, we recommend that you have your passport photo taken by a professional.

Children up to 12 years old

To get a " ID " for your child, you'll need the following:

  • You need written consent from both parents or from the person who has custody of the child.
  • Please bring the original identification document or passport of both parents or of the person who has custody of the child.
  • Please bring a clear, recent passport-style photo that is no more than 6 months old at the time of application and meets the passport photo requirements at .
  • Please bring all of your child's passports and ID cards that you still have, even if they have expired.
  • Please bring a debit card or cash. You'll pay right away when you submit your application. 

Your child must be present in person when submitting the application and when picking up the ID. At least one parent or guardian must be present when submitting the application.

To have a passport photo taken in the photo booth, your child must be at least 1.40 meters tall. You can only pay contactlessly in the photo booths.

Delivery Time and Pickup

Please pick up your ID no later than 6 business days from now.

Please make an appointment to pick up your card. You must pick up your “ ID ” within 3 months at the location where you applied for the “ Map .”

If you no longer have your old ID and do not have any other form of identification, the municipality will first verify your identity. As a result, it may take longer for you to receive your ID .

After picking it up, you will receive a letter from DigiD within 5 business days. You can use this letter to activate the login feature on your ID .

Validity

A " ID " is valid for 10 years if you are 18 years of age or older.

Are you under 18? If so, your ID is valid for 5 years.

Secure copy ID

Prevent identity theft. With the KopieID app, you can use your smartphone to make a secure copy of your ID.

Don't have the KopieID app? Visit the Dutch Consumer Association ( Rijksoverheid ) website at to learn how to recognize and prevent identity fraud.

Refugee passport or Alien's passport

If you do not have Dutch citizenship, you may be able to apply for a refugee passport or Alien's passport apply for one.

Under guardianship

Are you under guardianship? If so, you can also apply for a " ID ." You do not need permission from your guardian to do so.

Name Change

Is your name changing? If so, you'll need to apply for a new travel document.

Gender change

Are you changing your gender? If so, you must apply for a new travel document.
