Identity card (ID card)
An identity card (ID card) allows you to show who you are (identification). You can also use it to travel to most countries in Europe. Starting in 2021, your new ID card will have an additional function. You can use it to log in at the government, education, health or your pension fund.
To apply for, renew or replace your ID card, you must make an appointment.
Applying for and collecting an ID card must always be done in person, this also applies to children. From the age of 12 a child may apply for and collect his/her own ID card.
Children up to 12 years old can request an ID card themselves but only with the permission of all persons with (parental) authority. Please use the form below:

ID card lost or stolen
- If your ID card is lost or stolen in the Netherlands, you can immediately apply for a new one. With this application you will sign a Declaration of Loss. You do not have to report it to the police.
- However, if you have insurance against theft, reporting it to the police is recommended.
- If you need to travel immediately, you can request an emergency document from the Royal Military Police.
- If you find your old ID card, you are required to turn it in to the municipality. This is because this ID card is no longer valid.
- If you lose your ID card abroad, report it to the local police. Ask for written proof of this statement. You will need this for your insurance. In the Netherlands you do not have to report it to the Dutch police.
- Report to the Dutch embassy or consulate that your ID card has been lost or stolen and request an emergency document.
- With the foreign record, you can apply to the municipality for a new ID card.

Rush application
Do you need your ID card urgently? Then you can submit a rush application. If you submit the rush application before 2:00 PM, you can usually collect your travel document the next working day after 10:00 AM. At the offices in Brielle or Rockanje, the rush procedure takes at least 48 hours.

Traveling with children
- Children must have their own travel documents and may no longer be credited in their parents' passports.
- If you are traveling abroad with your child and you have a different last name, you will need proof that you are the parent or have parental authority.

What should I do?
- You apply for the ID card in person at the municipality where you live. Children who want their own ID card must also come to the municipality.
- You must pick up your ID card in person. This must be done within 3 months of your application. After that, your ID card will be destroyed. Are you also collecting an ID card for your child? If so, please bring your child with you.
- Has your ID card expired? Then turn it in to the municipality.
- Is your ID card (seriously) damaged? Then apply for a new ID card. You also turn in the old ID card to the municipality.
Physical or mental disability
If a physical or mental disability prevents you from applying for ID card in person, an employee of the municipality can come to you. If in doubt, the municipality will ask you for a medical certificate.
What do I need to bring to the application?
- An accurate looking passport photo that
- is not older than 6 months at the time of application
- meets passport photo requirements.
- All passports and identity cards you still have. Even if they have expired.
- If you are applying for a second passport, bring proof that you need the second passport.
- If your passport was lost or stolen abroad, take the foreign police report with you.
- Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.
- There are photo booths at the town hall in Brielle and at the town hall in Hellevoetsluis. You can only pay contactless at the photo booths. If you have gray or light blond hair, we advise you to take a photo at the specialist.
Children up to 12 years old
- Written consent from both parents or person(s) with parental authority of the child. Please use the form below for this purpose. You can also both sign on the spot, in which case you do not need to bring a completed form.
- The original proof of identity or passport of both parents or the person(s) with parental authority.
- Children must be present in person when applying for and collecting their ID.
- At least one parent or guardian must be present at the time of application.
- An accurate looking passport photo that is not older than 6 months at the time of application. The passport photo must meet the passport photo requirements.
- All passports and ID cards you still have of your child. Even if they have expired.
- Debit card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.
- There are photo booths at the town hall in Brielle and at the city hall in Hellevoetsluis. To take a passport photo in this booth, your child must be at least 1.40 meters tall. You can only pay contactless at the photo booths.

Pick up ID card
You can pick up your ID card after 6 working days. After picking up your ID card at the municipal counter, you will receive a letter from DigiD within 5 working days. With this you can activate the login function. For more information, visit www.digid.nl
If you have made a rush application before 2:00 PM, you can usually pick up your ID card the next business day after 10:00 AM. Please note that a rush procedure takes up to 3 business days.
If you no longer have your old ID card and you have no other proof of identity, the municipality will do research to determine your identity. As a result, it may take longer for you to receive your ID card.
To pick up your ID , you must make a Make an appointment appointment. You must, within three months, pick up the travel document at the location where you applied for it.
Additional information
- If you are not a Dutch national, you may be eligible for a Refugee Passport or an Alien's passport.
- If you are under guardianship, you can apply for an ID card yourself. You don't need permission from the curator.
- If you change your name, you must apply for a new travel document.
- If you change gender, you must apply for a new travel document.
Validity
An ID card is valid for 10 years if you are 18 years or older. If you are under 18, an ID card is valid for 5 years.
