Tree maintenance

Trees, plants, shrubs and grass are an important part of our villages and neighborhoods. The presence of greenery is good for the health of residents. Green also provides cooling and it reduces flooding because rainwater is better collected. Trees have many important functions in public spaces. Trees provide oxygen, combat heat stress, provide shade and contribute to the city's biodiversity. Trees also have a clear ornamental function due to their size, shape and location. Voorne aan Zee is a municipality with many trees and greenery and we are proud of that. Leaves, loose branches, blossoms, fruits and seeds are natural phenomena that belong inextricably to trees and are part of the natural cycle.

Tree management

Municipality of Voorne aan Zee is responsible for all trees on municipal land. The municipality carries out regular inspections. On average, every tree is inspected once every three years. Trees at risk are inspected annually. Sometimes these checks result in activities such as pruning or cutting down.

For example, the tree inspectors look for fungi and fungi. These can affect the tree. Age can also cause the quality of the tree to deteriorate. As a result, branches may die or the entire tree may die. If in doubt, the municipality has further research done. A tree should not pose a danger to the environment.

Tree maintenance should take into account the type of tree and its surroundings. If possible, pruning should take place outside the breeding season of birds. Also, not all trees can be pruned just like that (for example, due to legislation). And for some trees pruning may not be a good idea at all.

On the work on trees page you can read which trees will be felled or planted in the near future.

Trees and operations

Voorne aan Zee is developing. Therefore, there is regular work on sewers, roads or quays. This may involve trees in the work area. The municipality then carefully considers what should happen to a tree. The preservation of the tree is paramount. The municipality always tries to plant a new tree when a tree is removed. This is not always possible because, for example, there are now more cables and pipes in the ground than in the past.

Cutting down trees

In special cases, trees must be cut down because of safety, public health or irreparable damage. The municipality also sometimes removes trees for development of villages or neighborhoods. The municipality always considers whether new trees can be replaced.

No environmental permit is required for felling trees when the cross-section (diameter) of the trunk of the tree at a height of 130 cm from the ground is less than 50 cm.
