Tree felling
If you want to cut down a tree, you sometimes need an environmental permit for the activity of felling. This used to be called the felling permit. You do not need a permit if the diameter (diameter) of the trunk of the tree at a height of 130 cm from the ground is less than 50 cm.
Important preparation
Before you can cut down a tree, you should check that there are no nests of birds or protected species present in the tree. These are in fact protected under the Omgevingswet.
Nests of pigeons, woodpeckers, crows or other general birds are protected only when in use (during the breeding season). You may remove these nests after the breeding season. An owl or raptor nest may also be present. Because many raptors and owls return to the same nest each year, these nests are protected year-round. A nature exemption is required to remove them.
In addition to bird nests, nests of squirrels or roosts of bats or martens (especially in tree cavities) may be present in trees. These habitats are also protected and may not be removed without a waiver. If you are not sure whether you need an exemption or a permit, you can check this via the permit check on the website of the environment counter.
If you need a felling permit, you can arrange this through the municipality. You can arrange a nature exemption through Omgevingsdienst Haaglanden. More information about protected species can be obtained from the municipality's ecologist via 14 0181 or nl
Make an appointment
If you do need a permit, you can apply for one in the Omgevingsloket. There you will get an overview of what you need to submit. An application through the Environment Counter saves both processing time and fees. You can also check with the municipality in advance by calling 14 0181.
What do I need?
With an application for an environmental permit to cut down a tree (timber stand), attach the following attachments:
- situation drawing;
- color photographs of the existing situation;
- justification for felling: size of tree, type of tree and reason for felling.
You make your application through the Environment Counter. Additional information may be required depending on the application and the situation.
Costs
You pay fees for applying for an environmental permit. You pay these fees (or part of them) even if your application is refused or withdrawn. The cost of removing a tree is for your own account.
