How does it work?

Residential nuisance occurs when a resident's behavior regularly or very often causes it to spoil the living enjoyment of nearby residents. Noise nuisance, threats, hanging around the porch, bullying and neighborly quarrels are examples. In addition, the person may also be harming themselves, such as with addiction problems.

What should I do?

Start talking to your neighbors even with minor irritations, because irritations can quickly become bigger if you don't talk about them. By taking quick action, bigger problems can often be prevented.

Tips for having a conversation:

  • Health that you know what you want to say. Write down in advance what is bothering you and what you want to ask the neighbors.
  • Tell your neighbors you want to talk and find a time that is convenient for both of you.
  • Tell calmly and briefly what is bothering you, using examples. And what the consequences are for you (for example, that you cannot sleep). Ask your neighbors what they think about this and listen to the answer.
  • Ask if the neighbors might also be bothered by you. Listen to each other and try to put yourself in your neighbor's shoes. If you don't understand things, ask how and why.
  • Don't complain alone, but seek a solution together. If you are willing to delve into each other's points of view, you are more likely to find a solution.
  • Make clear and achievable agreements with each other and Health that you remain in conversation, even if you are not able to find a solution right away.
  • Avoid arguing. When it does happen, try to settle it as soon as possible.

Neighborhood Mediation

Sometimes it can be difficult to call someone to account in a certain situation. In that case, it may help to have that conversation with someone there, such as someone from Neighborhood Mediation.

More information can be found at Neighborhood Mediation or on the Push Foundation website.
