Driver's License

License application or renewal

• You apply for your first driver's license in person at City Hall. You cannot do this digitally.
• You can only apply digitally if you want to renew or add a new category to your license.
• You can pick up your driver's license 5 days after applying at City Hall.

Make a rush application

• Do you need your driver's license quickly? Then make a rush application.
• If you made a rush application before 2:00 PM, you can usually pick up your driver's license the next working day after 10:00 AM. Please note that a rush procedure takes up to 3 business days.
• You will pay additional fees for a rush application.

Driver's license lost or stolen

• Have you lost your driver's license? Or has it been stolen?
• Report this first on the RDW website. For this you need DigiD. Do you not have DigiD? Report the loss to the municipality.
• Apply for a new driver's license at the municipality. Bring a color passport photo and valid identification.

Driver's license application for people under 18 years old

Have you obtained your driver's license and are not yet 18 years old? Then you may only drive when a coach is sitting next to you. A coach can be, for example, one of your parents or guardians. You may have a maximum of 5 coaches.

Rules about coaches:

• As a coach, you register visibility on the RDW website.
• After the coach registers, the driver applies for a companion pass on the RDW website.
• After you receive the companion pass, you can apply for the driver's license at the municipality.

In Voorne aan Zee , you can renew your driver's license online. You can pick up your new license after only 2 working days at the town hall.  

Renew online through RDW

You can renew your driver's license under the following Requirements:

• You are registered in Voorne aan Zee.
• You have Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit. Or you have the nationality of one of the EU countries or EEA countries or Switzerland. See which countries belong to the EEA on the Rijksoverheid website.
• Your driver's license was not taken by the police. Read more on the Rijksoverheid website.
• You are going to renew your driver's license (also for code 95) or expand a category. 
• You have an activated DigiD app with a one-time identity check. For this, you need an Android smartphone with NFC reader (Android version 6.0 or higher) or an iPhone (model 7 or higher with IOS 13 or higher).

The online application is easy and quick!

Have a passport photo taken at an RDW-approved photographer or photo booth. Bring your current driver's license (or license number) with you. You can find an approved photographer or photo booth with the RDW location guide on the RDW website.

The photographer sends your passport photo and signature for the new driver's license securely and digitally to the RDW. Within a few minutes you will receive an e-mail from the RDW. This states whether your application has been approved and whether you can renew the driver's license online.

You do an identity check with a cell phone. You need the DigiD app for this. Read further for more information about the DigiD identity check.

• Apply for your driver's license using the "renew license" button.
• Pay the fee via IDEAL.
• You will receive an email 2 business days after the application that your new driver's license is ready.

Pick up your new driver's license at the reception desk of the town hall. An appointment is required. Make your appointment here. Pick up your driver's license within 3 months. After that, this is no longer possible. You will have to make a new application. Bring your current driver's license with you.  You have to turn it in.

How long is my driver's license valid?

The validity of your driver's license B (passenger car) depends on your age.

• Are you under the age of 65? Then your driver's license is valid for 10 years.
• Are you between the ages of 65 and 70? Then your driver's license is valid until your 75th birthday.
• Are you between the ages of 70 and 75? Then your driver's license is valid for 5 years.
• Are you older than 75 years of age? Then your driver's license is valid for a maximum of 5 years.
• License C (truck) and license D (bus) are valid for up to 5 years.

When do I need a Healt Declaration?

With a Healt Declaration, CBR assesses whether you are mentally and physically able to drive. This is important for road safety. You can fill out the Health Declaration on the CBR website. The municipality also sells these 75+ statements at all Hellevoetsluis, Brielle and Rockanje locations.

You need a Health Declaration in the following situations:

• You are applying for a practical exam for the first time or you want a category extension to your license.
• You want to obtain or renew driver's license C and/or D.
• You have a medical disability.
• Your driver's license has been taken.
• You are 75 years of age or older.

When do I need a medical examination?

You must be medically examined before applying for a driver's license in the following situations:

• You have a medical disability.
• You are 75 years old or older and your driver's license is expiring.
• You need a driver's license for truck or bus.

Start your medical examination well before your driver's license expires. Don't start on time? Then your license may expire while you have not yet been examined. You will not be allowed to drive (temporarily).

• An accurate looking passport photo that
  • is not older than 6 months at the time of application
  • meets the passport photo requirements, which can be found on the Rijksoverheid website.
• There are photo booths at the ticket office in Brielle and at the town hall in Hellevoetsluis. You can only pay contactless at the photo booths. If you have gray or light blond hair, we advise you to take a photo at the specialist. 
• A bank card or cash. You pay directly at the time of application.
• Are you applying for a driver's license for the first time? Then bring a valid passport or ID with you.
• Are you renewing your driver's license? Then bring your old driver's license with you. Is your current driver's license no longer valid? If so, bring a valid passport or ID with you as well.

To apply for, renew or replace your driver's license, you must make an appointment. An appointment is also required to pick up your driver's license.

An appointment is required to pick up your driver's license. You must, within three months, pick up your driver's license at the location where you applied for it.

Driver's license with chip

Driver's licenses have a new chip. With this chip you can log in to DigiD. If you want a new driver's license without this chip, you must send a letter to the RDW. Do this 5 days before you renew your driver's license. For more information, visit the RDW website.

Beginner's License

Everyone who gets their first driver's license is a beginner. It doesn't matter how old you are. Or what type of vehicle the license is for. How long you will be a new driver depends on your age.

• If you are 18 or older, you will be a new driver for 5 years.
• 17-year-olds will be new driver for 7 years.

New drivers get a beginner's license. This is a regular driver's license, but with a penalty point system for serious traffic offenses. For more information, visit the Rijksoverheid website at .

Military driver's license

A Dutch military driver's license is not valid outside the military organization. However, you can exchange the military driver's license for a normal driver's license at the municipality. Do this within 3 years of receiving your military driver's license.

Foreign driver's license

A valid foreign driver's license allows you to drive in the Netherlands for a certain amount of time. This depends on the country where your license was issued. For more information, visit the RDW website.

Code 95

• Code 95 must be on your driver's license if you want to drive a bus or truck for work.
• This code demonstrates you are fit for work.
• Have you passed the exams and tests? Then apply to the municipality for a new driver's license.
• The code 95 will appear on your new driver's license after category C and/or D.
• Were you born before July 1, 1955? Then new rules will apply to you as of December 1, 2020, check the CBR website.
