Preventing burglary
A burglary can have many consequences. In addition to material damage, a burglary can be a traumatic experience for people. The municipality and police therefore do as much as possible to prevent burglaries. You can also take measures yourself.
What should I do?
Burglars come in all shapes and sizes. For example, there are professional burglars who operate in a group. But someone can also break in on their own.
Pay attention to persons displaying abnormal behavior. You can often tell soon enough when someone is behaving conspicuously. For example, this person often walks past a house, returns several times or takes pictures of the area. It may then be a burglar who is investigating.
Do you see someone exhibiting suspicious behavior and don't trust it? Then call the police immediately at telephone number 112.
Prevent burglary in your home
You can do a lot yourself:
- Always lock windows and doors tightly, even if you are only away for a short time.
- Lock doors when you leave or go to sleep. Closing the front door behind you is not enough!
- Leave enough lights on so that it looks like you are home. Use time switches if necessary.
- Put valuables out of sight.
- Health for good outdoor lighting and prune or remove bushes behind which a burglar can hide. Thieves don't like to stand in the light.
- Put away or secure ladders and other objects on which thieves can climb.
- Health that your hinges and locks meet the requirements of the Police Mark Safe Living. The chances of your home being broken into are then many times smaller.
- Will you be away from home a little longer, such as because of vacation? If so, tell your neighbors. Ask them to keep an eye on you while you are away.
Prevent your car from being broken into
- Never leave valuables in the car, such as camera, phone, suitcase, car papers, money or credit cards.
- Also, do not leave other items visible in the car, such as a shopping bag, boxes or clothing.
- Show that you are not hiding anything valuable. Open the glove box.
- Thieves also search under your seat. So don't store anything there.
- Park in a spot that is well lit. This will allow others to see your car.
- Remove the imprint of the navigation system suction cup from the windshield.
- Does your car have "keyless entry? If so, keep the key somewhere protected from reading.
- Do you have a station wagon? Then don't cover an empty cargo area.
- Register valuable possessions that are fixed in your car, such as a navigation system. Make a note of the information and keep it safe.
- Always report a poorly lit (parking) space to the municipality.
Was it broken into anyway?
Contact the police as soon as possible to report.
