Gladness control
As a municipality, we fight slippery roads. We grit before the roads become slippery due to freezing, snow or sleet. This page tells you which roads we grit and when we do it. For information about buckets of road salt, click below on 'What you can do yourself'.
When are we going to grit?
We keep a close eye on the weather 24 hours a day. This allows us to grit in time when slipperiness is expected. We check the temperature of the road surface and keep track of whether the road is dry, wet, slippery or salted. We do this using four of our own measuring points with sensors in the roads and bike paths, as well as daily weather information from Weerplaza.
Spreading routes
First, we clear the through roads, through bicycle paths and bus routes within the built-up area of snow and ice. Then we grit at (neighborhood) shopping centers, cemeteries, municipal buildings, market grounds and a number of streets in the fortress of Brielle and Hellevoetsluis. We do this only when necessary and only during the day. Just like the gritting area on through roads, the above locations are also gritted according to a predetermined plan/route.
The gritting routes for roads and bicycle paths can be found on this Map.
A list of all streets that are fully or partially gritted can be found on the streets gritted in slippery conditions page. Please be aware of winter conditions when traveling on the road. Adjust your speed and use gritted roads as much as possible. Even though it has been gritted, it can still be slippery on roads and bike paths.
Why aren't all streets gritted?
Spreading salt is of little use in areas with little traffic. Road salt works best when it is driven in by friction with (car) tires. Gladness can therefore not be prevented in places with little traffic, such as residential areas, 30-km zones and parking lots. In addition, the municipality does not have the capacity to grit all streets, paths and sidewalks.
What can you do yourself do?
You can remove snow from the sidewalk in several ways. The easiest is to use a snow plow and sweep away the last of the snow. Health that you always have enough salt to grit on hand. Then you can keep the sidewalk in front of your home free of snow and ice.
Other roads
The roads managed by the Hollandse Delta Water Board are also gritted. On the website of Waterschap Hollandse Delta you will find a Map where they grit the roads. On the A and N roads the roads are gritted by Rijkswaterstaat and the province of Zuid-Holland, this Map can be found on the website of Rijkswaterstaat.
Additional information
Would you like to make a report about ice control? Then you can do this online onthe page Report public space.
Do you have any questions? Please contact the municipality by phone at 14 01 81. Questions about smoothness on the gritting routes are passed on to the smoothness coordinator. Reports of slipperiness outside the gritting routes or missing roads/bicycle paths are noted and discussed in the annual post-winter review, but this does not mean that the gritting routes are adjusted. The municipality guarantees the passability of the established gritting routes and will not contact you about adjustments or reports. Please check the gritting routes for changes next winter.
