Municipal awards

Municipal awards are intended as a sign of appreciation from the municipality, as well as the local community, for individuals who fulfill an exemplary function within the municipality of Voorne aan Zee or have done something special. Residents who dedicate themselves voluntarily, without self-interest, to the community in social, societal or cultural areas, for example.

The special contribution of residents to society is not always visible to the municipality. Therefore, we ask you or your organization to make a nomination. You cannot apply for an award for yourself. Someone else must do that for you.

 There are four different municipal awards:

The Bronze Shell

This award is as a token of appreciation and gratitude for very special and long-lasting services that have benefited the municipality of Voorne aan Zee.

The award is presented once a year during the New Year's Reception by the mayor of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee or his deputy. This may be deviated from in exceptional cases.

A person is eligible for the award in the following situations:

  • The candidate has made a special meritorious contribution to the community in the municipality of Voorne aan Zee in the social, economic, cultural or sporting fields for an extended period (at least 10 years) and is an example for the community.
  • The candidate has developed activities in a special way that has benefited the promotion of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee .
  • The person must be a resident of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee; an association or institution must be located in the municipality.

A candidate who has previously received a royal decoration or winners of decorations from the former municipalities of Brielle, Hellevoetsluis and Westvoorne, are not eligible if it concerns commitment to the same activities. However, in the case of long-term performance of additional, new activities, this is possible.

Voorne aan Zee token

The Voorne aan Zee medal is a token of appreciation for special merit and can be awarded several times a year.

A person is eligible for the award in the following situations:

  • The candidate has made a special contribution to a social, societal, economic or cultural project, a heroic act, sports achievement (at least Dutch champion) or has made another special achievement.
  • The award may be assigned to residents of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee. In exceptional cases this may be deviated from.

Youth ribbon

The Municipality of Voorne aan Zee is proud of young residents who dedicate themselves to others or have performed a special deed. For them there is the youth ribbon.

A person is eligible for the award in the following situations:

  • The candidate is between the ages of 6 and 21 and a resident of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee.
  • The candidate has voluntarily delivered at least one year of special merit for the immediate environment and/or another, society, association, institution, nature, culture, charity or school in the municipality of Voorne aan Zee or beyond.
  • Or the candidate has performed a special act of heroism or achievement that puts the municipality of Voorne aan Zee in a positive light on the Map .
  • Or the candidate has taken an initiative, which benefits the society and/or promotion of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee .

Honorary Citizen

Honorary citizenship may be awarded as a token of very great appreciation and deep gratitude, both to a resident and non-resident of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee, who has rendered meritorious service to the municipality and the local community in a most exceptional manner. These merits demonstrably exceed what society may expect of someone in a similar position. Through her/his efforts, the candidate creates a positive image for the municipality. 

Honorary citizenship has an exclusive nature and is therefore granted only in very exceptional cases.

Other awards

Medal of Honor for Humane Aid

This Medal of Honor is the oldest and most important Dutch decoration for brave deeds performed outside combat (war or terrorism). The decoration is awarded to "those who have performed a humanitarian act that bears the hallmarks of courage, policy and self-sacrifice. There is a bronze, silver and gold version.

A humanitarian act means a life-saving action or an attempt to do so. Three criteria are met:

  • Courage: doing something that others neglect or dare not do
  • Policy: thoughtful and decisive action
  • Self-sacrifice: endangering one's life

Carnegie Heroes Fund Foundation

Do you know someone who has performed a heroic act at the risk of their life? Then you can nominate that person for an award from the Carnegie Heroes Fund Foundation. For more information, please visit the website nl.

Society for the Rescue of Drowning Persons

The Drowning Rescue Society awards people who have rescued or resuscitated someone in a drowning situation. The website nl provides more information and an application form.

Other applications can be submitted no later than 6 weeks before the desired issue date. If the situation calls for it, an exception to this is possible by mutual agreement.

  • The College of B&W always retains the right to reclaim a municipal award if circumstances warrant.
