Social assistance benefit provide you with a minimum income. Learn more about applying for benefits on this page. 

Requirements

You can apply for benefits if you meet the following Requirements:

  • You (and your partner) do not have enough money to live on. Your income and assets are below the social assistance level. Note that a car or a house also count as equity.
  • You are 18 years of age or older.
    You live in the Netherlands.
  • You cannot get another benefit.
  • You may apply for a Social assistance benefit . For example, you are not a prisoner or a foreigner who is not allowed to be in the Netherlands.
  • The municipality decides whether you are entitled to benefits and how high your benefits will be.
    You must apply for a job to find work as soon as possible. 

How does it work?

  • You apply for assistance through the UWV Employment Agency website .
  • The UWV WERKbedrijf first registers you as a job seeker and immediately checks to see if there is work for you.
  • If you cannot get started right away, follow all the steps and complete your information.
    The municipality will decide within 8 weeks of receiving your application. The municipality may extend this deadline once.
  • You can object to the municipality's decision. Do this within 6 weeks. Do you then disagree with the decision on the objection? Then appeal to the court.

Job search waiver

If you really cannot work, you can request a waiver from the municipality. You will then not have to look for work temporarily. The municipality decides whether you will get dispensation.
Are you a single parent of young children (under 5 years old)? Then you can get dispensation. Instead of looking for work, you might take a course. For more information, please contact your customer manager.
