Silting of Haringvliet estuary; research nearing completion

Silting is taking place off the coast of Rockanje and Oostvoorne, at the Kop van Goeree and in the channel to the Haringvliet. The seabed in the Haringvliet estuary has changed dramatically in recent decades and this process of silting is continuing. This has consequences for recreation, tourism, shipping and nature, for example.

Research into silting

Together with 11 other parties, the municipality of Westvoorne has therefore had a study carried out. They want the area around the Haringvliet estuary to remain an attractive and liveable area to live, work and recreate in. The study provides important information for the future of the coastal area.

Stakeholder meeting

This information was shared with organisations and companies that are affected by the silting. During a digital stakeholder meeting on 20 January, approximately 50 representatives from various sectors such as nature, maritime, tourism, recreation and government were present. They also discussed with each other what is important to them for the future.

Administrative level

There is also a lot of attention for the silting at the administrative level. On 24 January there was a meeting for the general boards of the authorities involved in the research (water board Hollandse Delta, province South Holland and the municipalities Brielle, Goeree-Overflakkee, Hellevoetsluis, Nissewaard and Westvoorne) and administrative representatives of the Vereniging Natuurmonumenten, foundation Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap, Recreatieschap Voorne-Putten, Rijkswaterstaat and the Port of Rotterdam. More than 80 administrators, including members of our municipal council, were present.

Follow-up

On Thursday 3 February, the investigation will be concluded in a meeting of the twelve coalition parties. More will also be known about the steps that the parties want to take in the coming period.
