Research on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
On this page, you can read more about the initiative “Research on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).”
What are we going to do?
Small modular nuclear reactors, also known as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), are new designs for nuclear power plants. They may play an important role in the energy supply in the future. There is no single type of SMR. An SMR can be small—as big as a shipping container—but it can also be larger, up to about the size of the Borssele nuclear power plant.
Together with the municipalities of Rotterdam and Westland, among others, we are participating in a study on the possibilities and Requirements the installation of SMRs. This study does not focus on specific locations. The province of South Holland initiated this study.
We are participating because the municipality of Voorne aan Zee considers Voorne aan Zee into future energy sources to be important.
