NVWA Combats the Asian Tiger Mosquito in Hellevoetsluis
On Thursday, September 10, 2026, Asian tiger mosquitoes were found in part of the Nieuw-Helvoet neighborhood in Hellevoetsluis. If their numbers increase, these mosquitoes can transmit tropical diseases. That is why it is important to control them quickly.
The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) began its control efforts this week. The NVWA will continue these efforts through October/November, which marks the end of the mosquito season.
What does the NVWA do?
The NVWA removes standing water or treats it with a substance that kills mosquito larvae. This substance is harmless to humans and other animals. They also set up mosquito traps in various locations to see if the control measures are effective.
Over the next month, the NVWA will be treating the street drains in this neighborhood with a mosquito-larva control agent. For this reason, the municipality will clean the drains as little as possible.
How can you identify the tiger mosquito?
Tiger mosquitoes are small black mosquitoes with a white stripe on their backs, white stripes on their legs, and unmarked wings. They are smaller than the common house mosquito.
