National Heat Plan in Effect: How to Keep Yourself and Those Around You Healthy
On June 18, the RIVM activated the National Heat Plan for the entire country. This decision was made following consultation with the KNMI, which is forecasting extreme heat in the coming days. Why is this plan in effect?
Heat can cause serious health problems, especially among vulnerable groups: the elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses, and those who have difficulty cooling their homes. The heat plan helps reach and protect these groups in a timely manner.
Basic Rules for Hot Weather
- Drink plenty of water or tea, even if you're not thirsty
- Stay in the shade and limit physical activity between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
- Keep your home cool: keep the curtains closed during the day and open the windows early in the morning
- Be on the lookout for people around you who might need help
Health Each Other
Do you have older neighbors, family members, or people in your community who live alone? Stop by or give them a call to see how they’re doing. Offer them a glass of water, help them close the curtains, or go outside together in the early morning or evening. Avoid the hottest hours of the day.
