A berth is a water parcel with adjacent land where a houseboat may moor. So a mooring place is not just a piece of free bank. The municipality determines the locations of moorings in public water.

If you want to occupy a berth with a houseboat or other vessel, you ask the municipality if you can use a berth. You may have to apply for a permit to do so.

How does it work?

The municipality determines which spots in public water are moorings. It also determines what type of vessels may be moored there and how many places there are. Vessels include: houseboats, jetties or pontoons.

The municipal rules do not apply if the water is managed by the Rijksoverheid, the province or the water board. If you do not know who manages the public water, check with the municipality.
