Pupil Transport
Your financial situation should not interfere with your children's choice of school. You can apply to the municipality for pupil transport for your child's transport costs. This involves transportation between your home address and the nearest school that is appropriate for your child.
How does it work?
You can apply for pupil transportation if your child attends one of the schools listed below:
- elementary school (BO)
- secondary schools (VO)
- special schools for primary education (SBO)
- special education (SO) and secondary special education (VSO)
- other schools such as ZMLK, ZMOK, mytyl and tyltyl education, schools for the sensory impaired and the multiple disabled (mg)
The municipality looks at the travel distance your child must travel. The distance from home to school must be at least 6 kilometers (according to ANWB's route planner).
It is also possible to apply for pupil transportation if your child travels to school with a companion by public transportation.
Types of pupil transportation
The municipality offers different types of pupil transportation:
- bicycle allowance
- bicycle allowance with guidance
- electric bicycle (for more information contact student transportation consultant)
- public transport
- accompanied public transport
- use of own transport
- adapted (cab) transportation
The municipality considers what best suits the situation. To get a good idea of the possibilities, the municipality can ask for an independent medical examination at the SAP Foundation. A doctor working without the influence of the municipality will then assess whether your child can attend school independently, accompanied or with adapted transport. The municipality pays for this examination.
Requirements to be met by the school
- The school provides education that your child needs.
- The school takes into account your beliefs and religion. A way of teaching, such as Jenaplan and Montessori, is not a philosophy of life.
- Gifted students, who attend a Leonardo school, may be eligible for pupil transportation in exceptional cases. This requires further investigation. For more information, contact the student transportation coordinator.
Principles
- If students cannot travel independently or accompanied due to their disabilities, adapted transportation is available.
- Students up to age 9 can use adapted transportation.
- An allowance is available for students 9 years and older so that your child can travel independently or accompanied by public transportation.
- Parents/caregivers are responsible for accompanying their child on public transportation. They can accompany their child on public transport themselves, or use someone from their own network for this purpose.
- The fact that both parents/caregivers work is not a reason for requesting adapted (cab) transportation.
- Does accompanying a child take more than 4 hours per day (round trip of the accompanying person for morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up, including waiting time)? If so, the child may travel by adapted transportation.
- For secondary special education students who can travel independently, the municipality reimburses 100% of the cost.
Application for child placed out of home
If your child has been placed out of the home by the court, the guardian can file an application. Are you the child's guardian? If so, submit a copy of the court's decision.
Make an appointment
You must submit your application by June 1 of the upcoming school year.
