Coastal sanding
Coastal South Holland islands, research and development estuary Haringvliet
Silting up is taking place off the coast of Voorne, at the Kop van Goeree and in the channel to the Haringvliet. Already you can walk very far into the sea before you are waist deep in water. This affects nature, the character of the beach area, recreational opportunities and water safety, among other things. In the latter aspect, rising sea levels also play a role.

Future
In order to make good choices for the area in the future, a comprehensive study of silting and its consequences is important. The former Municipality of Westvoorne commissioned this study together with eleven other parties. Because together these parties want this to remain an attractive and livable area in which to live, work and recreate.
We do this together
The silting up of the coast is not only of concern to the municipality of Voorne aan Zee. That is why the following parties have entered into cooperation:
Municipality of Voorne aan Zee, Water Board Hollandse Delta, Province of South Holland, Natuurmonumenten, Municipality of Nissewaard, Rijkswaterstaat, Recreatieschap Voorne-Putten, the Zuid-Hollands Landschap, Municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, Port of Rotterdam.
Future prospects for silting Haringvliet estuary
The coastal area in the Haringvliet estuary can develop naturally, with nature and economy going hand in hand. This has a positive effect on nature and water safety and also offers new opportunities for recreation. It is therefore not an option to prevent natural development. This is stated in a future perspective commissioned by ten collaborating parties. In the right-hand column you can read the full news release.
The final products of the vision development can be found on the Voorne aan Zee council information system website. Select from the calendar February 5 Meeting of council: Sanding Haringvliet estuary.
Vision development siltation Haringvliet estuary
As part of the vision development for the siltation of the Haringvliet estuary, which is being carried out by KuiperCompagnons on behalf of the cooperating coalition, meetings were held on November 14 and 16 for general board members of involved authorities and stakeholders. During these meetings, a Future Outlook was presented, to which reactions could be given. Views were also exchanged on how nature and recreation can reinforce each other in the area.
This included questions from some council members about the effects of silting on opportunities for recreation on the beach. The stakeholders responded positively to the study of the future. The comments made will be considered by KuiperCompagnons in the further vision development process which is expected to be completed 1st quarter 2024.
Vision development on silting coast of South Holland islands launched
Research completed in 2022 shows that large-scale silting of the coast off the South Holland islands will continue into the future. The results of this study prompted ten collaborating parties to draw up a joint vision for the future of the area.
Silting up is taking place off the coast of Voorne, at the Kop van Goeree and in the channel to the Haringvliet. Already you can walk very far into the sea before you are waist-deep in water. The natural development of the coastal area has consequences for nature, the character of the beach area, recreational opportunities, economy, quality of life and water safety. In the latter aspect, rising sea levels also play a role.
Collaboration
The Municipality of Voorne aan Zee, Hollandse Delta Water Board, Province of South Holland, Natuurmonumenten, Municipality of Nissewaard, Rijkswaterstaat, Recreatieschap Voorne-Putten, the Zuid-Hollands Landschap, Municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee and the Port of Rotterdam have joined forces.
Together, the parties want this to remain an attractive and livable area in which to live, work and recreate. Based on the research completed in 2022 and the vision to be drawn up, the parties want to make good choices for the future of the area. The vision looks ahead to 2060 and should provide insight into the actions needed to realize the vision.
Participation
The vision must be consistent with the interests of the various coalition parties and take into account the interests of social parties and relevant stakeholders. To this end, a social sounding board group will be established. They will be involved in all three phases of the process:
- Exploration: Gathering information and ideas and desires from the coalition and community parties.
- Design research: Investigation of various future perspectives and a proposal for the integral direction/course. Any specific choices are named.
- Elaborate integral course: Including outline implementation program.
Vision development is expected to be completed in early 2024.
