When you come to live in the Netherlands, it is important that you learn the Dutch language. It is also important that you learn how Dutch people live and work. We call this integration. Integration from Jan. 1, 2022

On Jan. 1, 2022, the new Integration Act took effect From then on, it will be the municipality's job to get you integrated as soon as possible . You take language lessons, get a job or take a course. With this new law, newcomers quickly participate in the Netherlands.

Note: The new system applies to persons who are obliged to integrate after January 1, 2022. The letter from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs states the date from which you are required to integrate. How does it work?

Integration is mandatory for some groups.

Refugee/asylum migrant

Did you come to the Netherlands as a refugee and now have a residence permit? If so, you are a status holder. The following applies to you as a status holder:

  • You will receive a letter from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO). The letter states the date from which you must integrate. Do you no longer have the letter? In My Integration onnl you can see from when you have to integrate.
  • As a status holder, you will receive help with integration from the municipality. The municipality will contact you. You can also contact them yourself.
  • You will receive social guidance and practical support from Refugee Council. You can find more information on the website of Refugee Council.

Family migrant or other migrant

Did you not come to the Netherlands as a refugee and have a residence permit? Then you are a family migrant or other migrant. You are, for example, if you have come to the Netherlands to live with your Dutch partner. Or if you came to the Netherlands to work as a spiritual leader. The following applies to you as a family migrant or other migrant:

  • You can learn for the exam yourself, but most people do a course at a language school. You buy your civic integration lessons yourself from a language school. You can also take out a loan from DUO to cover the costs. For more information, visit nl.

Voluntary citizenship

Voluntary citizenship is also possible. That means you want it yourself, but it is not mandatory.

Failure to integrate

Check the IND website to see when you do not have to take an integration exam.

How long does it take?

You will receive the results of your exam within 8 weeks.

Successful

Have you passed the civic integration exam? Then DUO will send your diploma to you by registered mail.

Failed

If you did not pass, you can take the exam again. You will then also pay one more time.
