Commemoration of the End of World War II on August 15
On Saturday, August 15, we will gather at Voorne aan Zee to commemorate the end of World War II.
On that date, Japan surrendered, bringing an end to the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies. During this gathering, we commemorate all the victims of the war against Japan and of the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies.
Gathering in Brielle
Everyone is warmly invited to attend the memorial service.
We will meet on August 15 at 9:00 a.m. at the old town hall at Markt 1 in Brielle. Afterward, we will walk to the De Vlam Freedom Monument on Turfkade, where the ceremony will take place.
Deputy Mayor Aart Jan Spoon will give a speech and lay a wreath on behalf of the municipal government. We will observe two minutes of silence during the veterans’ salute. Afterward, all those present will have the opportunity to lay flowers at the monument. Sunflowers will be handed out to anyone who wishes to do so.
To wrap things up, we'll walk back to the old city hall for a casual get-together with coffee and spekkoek.
