Fifth-grade students from OBS De Houthoeffe sit down with Mayor Scheepers for a healthy breakfast

On Thursday, October 8, the fifth-grade class from OBS De Houthoeffe in Hellevoetsluis had breakfast with Mayor Arno Scheepers at City Hall during the Mayor’s Breakfast. This event is part of the National School Breakfast initiative, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy breakfast for all children.

While the breakfast table was filled with whole-grain products, fruit, dairy, and other healthy foods, the children chatted with the mayor. What does a mayor actually do all day? What do kids like to eat most for breakfast? And why does eating breakfast help you learn better and concentrate at school? It made for a morning full of fun conversations, new insights, and lots of enthusiasm, with starting the day off right being the top priority.

I really enjoyed having breakfast with the children from De Houthoeffe. Over a delicious and healthy breakfast in the council chamber, we talked about all sorts of things. And that’s perhaps the most important thing: eating together is, above all, a lot of fun!

Working Together to Ensure a Healthy Start

The Mayor’s Breakfast is part of the National School Breakfast initiative and takes place during Our Food Week. From October 6 through 9, mayors throughout the Netherlands will join elementary school students at the table to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy breakfast. Although eating breakfast may seem like a given for many children, that is not the case for everyone. That is precisely why schools, municipalities, local businesses, “Healthy School” advisors, and JOGG coordinators remain committed to promoting healthy eating habits. During the National School Breakfast, from November 9 through 13, this issue will once again be given special attention.
