Officially starting your business

Starting your own business starts with an idea and a dose of enthusiasm to put this idea on the market. To clarify your plans, goals, approach and whether your idea is feasible, you can follow the Chamber of Commerce's 10-step plan, see website ondernemersplein. 

Starting a business at home

There is a difference between working from home and a home business. A home business means that there is an office, practice or other work space located in or near a residential home where you work and receive clients. A freelancer who works from home but can also work at another location does not have a home business.

In addition to the Chamber of Commerce's 10-step plan for starting your own business, the following are important:

1. No permit is required for liberal professions such as coach, hairdresser, masseur, accountant or lawyer. For a store, workshop or similar workspace, it depends on the zoning plan of the municipality of Voorne aan Zee. To find out if your business fits within the zoning plan, you can:
   a. Check which zoning applies to your premises on the Omgevingsloket;
   b. Contact the Entrepreneurs' Desk for advice or assistance.
    
2. If the property in which you want to start your business is not your property, check to see if the lease or mortgage agreement states whether your own business is allowed. Caution! Starting your own home business may affect your rent allowance.
     
3. Starting your own business may also affect your income tax. For more information on this, please visit the Tax Office website at .
    
4. A house is a living space and must be used as such. Therefore, you are not allowed to use more than one-third of the home for your business. You are also not allowed to advertise on your home; however, a nameplate is allowed.
    
5. Starting a business involves the necessary risks. It is important to get the right insurance for this. On the Chamber of Commerce website you will find information on what you can and cannot insure, for yourself and for your business.

Starting from unemployment, welfare or disability

If you want to start your own business with Unemployment Benefit (WW) or from an assistance or disability situation, we advise you to apply for proper guidance. If you want to start a business from the assistance situation, you can contact the Regional Self-Employment Office of the Municipality of Rotterdam.

If you are unemployed and want to start your own business, we refer you to the UWV. They will guide you through the start-up process via a step-by-step plan.

If you have been declared disabled and want to start your own business from that situation, we recommend that you visit the website of the Chamber of Commerce. Here you will find a checklist for starting as Self-employed without personnel (ZZP). You can also find information on subsidies and schemes.
