Catharina Bridge Temporarily Closed Due to Poor Condition
On Friday, August 14, 2026, the municipality of Voorne aan Zee will have the superstructure and part of the bridge deck of the Catharina Bridge in Brielle removed.
The bridge is located across from the former municipal office. The contractor Beens is carrying out the work on behalf of the municipality.
A problem arose with the bridge this week. After it was opened, it could no longer be closed. A follow-up inspection revealed that the bridge is in poor condition. Therefore, it is not safe to open the bridge again or to leave it open.
The Catharina Bridge was already in poor condition. That is why a decision had already been made to replace the bridge. The replacement is scheduled for 2027. Due to the current situation, measures must be taken now. By removing the superstructure and part of the bridge deck, we are preventing an unsafe situation. This also ensures that safety in and around the port is maintained as much as possible.
The bridge will therefore be closed off with barriers. The municipality is exploring possible temporary solutions to maintain the connection as effectively as possible until the new bridge is in place. We will provide an update as soon as more information becomes available regarding a temporary solution and the schedule for replacing the bridge.
During the removal and hoisting of the superstructure and bridge deck, traffic around the Catharina Bridge may be temporarily affected by the work. At certain times, it may be necessary to briefly halt traffic so that the work can be carried out safely. Traffic control measures will be in place, and traffic directors will be on site to direct traffic. Road users are asked to allow for extra travel time and to follow the instructions provided.
