Voorne aan Zee in the Quality of Oostvoornse Meer

The municipality Voorne aan Zee , together with its partners, Voorne aan Zee in improving the quality of Lake Oostvoornse Meer. This investment is part of the “Netten op Zee” Regional Investment Program and is made possible by funding from the Climate Fund and the European Recovery and Resilience Facility. The measures will help create a more attractive recreational area, improve water quality, and increase focus on nature and heritage.

Windsurfers on Lake Oostvoornse Meer

Oostvoornse Meer is an important area for residents, visitors, and recreational users. The area is used for swimming, walking, running, cycling, diving, surfing, and fishing. Through the “Netten op Zee – Maasvlakte” Area Investment Program (Phase 1), the national government has allocated €1,000,000 to improve the quality of Oostvoornse Meer and the surrounding area.

With this quality improvement initiative, we are working to create an even more attractive and well-equipped environment, so that it remains a pleasant place to visit, even during periods when water quality is under pressure.”

Various measures

The quality improvement initiative focuses, among other things, on measures at Slag Stormvogel, Slag Bergeend, and the area around the Aan Zee parking lot. Efforts are underway to limit beach erosion, raise and widen the beach, renovate playground equipment, and improve parking facilities. At Slag Stormvogel, the unique shipwrecks in the lake will also receive extra attention, with improved information provided to visitors. Decisions regarding these measures at Slag Stormvogel and Slag Bergeend will be made shortly by the Voorne-Putten Recreation Board. In addition, artificial reefs will be constructed to enhance the water quality and ecological value of the area. On the south bank, the route from the Aan Zee parking lot to the Biberbunker will be improved, and the tourist transfer point will be renovated. Finally, the walking trails at Groene Strand will be raised to make them more accessible during the winter months.

Collaborating on Implementation

The measures were selected based on the wishes of managers, business owners, associations, and users. To implement the project, the municipality is collaborating with, among others, the Voorne-Putten Recreation Board, Staatsbosbeheer, the Hollandse Delta Water Board, the South Holland Landscape Foundation, and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands. The project will run from 2026 through 2029. During this period, the subprojects will be further developed and, where necessary following decision-making by the parties involved, implemented.
