Refugee ship visits Hellevoetsluis during Christmas period
As in previous years Voorne aan Zee the municipality Voorne aan Zee is offering a berth to a refugee ship from Krimpen aan den IJssel Voorne aan Zee this Christmas period.
This time it is the Danubia. The ship will be moored in the Hellevoetsluis Fortress on the Westkade near the lighthouse from December 15, 2025, until the end of January 2026, providing shelter for 150 people. After that, the ship will return to Krimpen aan den IJssel.
Temporary shelter
During the holiday season, inland shipping captains come to Krimpen aan den IJssel to moor their ships. This requires the space where the Danubia is moored. That is why the municipality of Krimpen aan den IJssel has once again asked our municipality to provide temporary shelter. The Municipal Executive has decided to cooperate with this request. In previous years, this temporary accommodation has worked very well.
The inhabitants of the ship
The Danubia is home to a group of families, men, and women from unsafe countries. There are around 150 people in total. They have been living together on the ship for some time and have formed a community. The residents have daily activities and education on board the ship. This will also be arranged while the ship is in Hellevoetsluis.
Supervision and safety
For safety reasons, security guards are present on the ship day and night. In addition, there is also a location manager who is in contact with the Boas, police, and fire department. The Municipal Health Service (GGD) and fire department are involved in health and fire safety on board.
