Voting: how does it work?

How does voting work in the election?

  • On November 22, bring your voting card and a valid ID to the polling station.
  • At the polling station you hand in your voting card. Also show your ID to the polling station.
  • At the polling station you will receive a ballot paper. This will list all the lists (parties) participating in the election and also all the candidates for whom you can vote.
  • You take the ballot paper with you into the voting booth. The vote is secret. The voting booths in the polling station are positioned so that no one can see who you are voting for. Only people with a physical disability may receive assistance in the voting booth.
  • Using a red pencil, color in the circle in front of the name of the person you want to vote for.
  • You can also leave the ballot paper blank. This is called blank voting.
  • Fold the ballot paper so that no one can see your choice.
  • After this, you put the ballot paper in the ballot box.

Blank votes

Do you not want to choose a candidate, but still want to use your right to vote? Then you can cast a blank vote. You go to the voting booth, but do not choose a candidate. So you do not fill in anything on the ballot paper. A blank vote is only blank if nothing is added to the ballot paper! Otherwise, this vote is invalid!

Your blank vote has no effect on the distribution of seats. A blank vote or an uncast vote does not go to the largest party. A blank vote does count in determining the turnout of the election.
