Tile rocking

Tiles out, greenery in. From March 21 to October 31, 2025, everyone can once again replace tiles with grass, flowers or a vegetable garden during the NK Tegelwippen. More greenery means less flooding during downpours, cooler cities in hot summers and a healthier living environment.

Tiles out, greenery in

Tile chipping means removing tiles from gardens or sidewalks and putting plants, grass or shrubs in their place. This makes the area greener, helps more plants and animals and allows water to drain better. As a result, you have less trouble with too much water and it gets less hot in the city.

Tile-sweeping is very important and necessary! Especially in cities.

Why flip?

  • Biodiversity: More plants and flowers create more life. Removing tiles and planting greenery brings more insects, birds and other animals. This creates more biodiversity in the city.
  • Water management: Greenery helps with water management. Plants and grass absorb rainwater better than tiles. This prevents flooding and maintains groundwater levels.
  • Climate change: Greenery also helps with the climate. Plants and trees provide shade and coolness. This helps make it less hot on hot days.
  • Air quality: Plants make the air cleaner. They absorb CO2 and release oxygen. They also filter particulates and other pollutants from the air.
  • Livability and health: Green is good for health. People feel better and healthier in a green environment. There is room to relax and exercise, which is good for mental health.
  • Beautiful environment: Green looks beautiful. It makes neighborhoods more beautiful and increases the value of homes.

Tile cab

For the first time this year, a free tile cab drove around Voorne aan Zee to collect chipped tiles from residents' homes. The tile cab drove throughout the municipality in May and June. This initiative was a pilot from the municipality to help residents make their gardens greener. It was a great success and the Tile Taxi was full in no time.
