Nature-inclusive building

The Municipality of Voorne aan Zee encourages nature-inclusive building and design, so that buildings and cities are not only a pleasant living environment for people, but also for plants and animals. Special attention is paid to the species that live in buildings, such as house sparrows, swifts and bats. These species depend on houses and buildings for nesting and habitat. Due to demolition, renovation and post-insulation, many of these habitats are disappearing, causing these species to slowly disappear from the city.

An important component, therefore, is the installation of nesting sites for swifts and house sparrows and habitats for bats in (newly constructed) houses and other buildings. There are also many other ways to give plants and animals a place in the city. Think of making green and brown roofs, green facades, nature-friendly banks, green garden fences (e.g. hedges) and of facilities for bees.

Measures that are positive for plants and animals, in many cases also contribute to climate adaptation. For example, greenery and water also provide shade and cooling during a heat wave. Less paving and green roofs ensure that less rainwater ends up in the sewer system. As a result, there is less flooding.
