Green Beach Pennant awarded again to beach Slikken van Voorne

On June 25, 2025, Alderman Spoon on behalf of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee and Mirjam Eikelenboom on behalf of Stichting Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap received the Green Beach Pennant for the beach Slikken van Voorne.

This prestigious seal of approval emphasizes the importance of conservation and cooperation on and around the beach. This is the third consecutive time this beach has received this recognition, a testament to the beach community's ongoing commitment to a nature-rich beach.

Broad collaboration

The award of the Green Beach Pennant was celebrated at Aan Zee restaurant, which was previously named the most sustainable beach pavilion in the Netherlands. Alderman Spoon of the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee expressed his pride at the gathering: "The Green Beach Pennant is a wonderful result of the broad cooperation in this unique area. Thanks to the involvement of so many parties, we can connect nature, recreation and education. Hoisting the pennant together with the volunteers is a special moment and an inspiring example of what we can achieve and preserve together."

The members of the beach community consisting of Stichting Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap, Stichting Strand in Zicht, KNNV, IVN, Strandbroeders, Natuurmonumenten, Restaurant Aan Zee and Municipality of Voorne aan Zee.

Beach Community

At the heart of the Green Beach Pennant is the creation and strengthening of an active beach community. This community is committed to nature conservation, education and monitoring and works with the municipality, local business owners and various nature organizations. Thanks to this collaboration, more and more opportunities are being created for nature and nature experiences.

Valuable natural area

The Slikken van Voorne are of great value to shorebirds and other flora and fauna. At the same time, the beach is a popular destination for kite surfers, hikers and other athletes. Mirjam Eikelenboom, forester at Stichting Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap explains: "Together you simply achieve more. That also applies to taking good care of nature and the beach. We do that together, as managers, volunteers and visitors."

Jury Report

The jury report shows that the Slikken van Voorne is a frontrunner in the development of beach communities. The jury praises the good cooperation between the municipality and the local community and commends the involvement and commitment of volunteers. Particular attention is paid to the course developed by the beach community to train new volunteers, as well as the information board on the beach that informs visitors about breeding birds and their results.
