Choosing a combined gender name

As of Jan. 1, 2024, a new law goes into effect: Introduction combined sex name. This means that you as parents cannot give your child only 1 surname. You can also give your child a combination of both your surnames.

An example

Parents de Vries and Jansen will have their first child in 2024. They can choose surnames:

  • de Vries
  • Jansen
  • de Vries Jansen
  • Jansen de Vries

Note: You can make this choice starting January 1, 2024. You can only do this if this is your first child.You make the choice at the time of recognition. Are you married or in a registered partnership? Then make an appointment for choice of name.

Transitional

Throughout 2024, you as parents can change your children's name to a double surname. To do this, come together by appointment to the town hall in Hellevoetsluis.
Possible:
- Your eldest child was born between January 1, 2016 - December 31, 2023.
- You are married, you have a registered partnership or you have acknowledged your children.
- You agree on the surname or surnames as parents.
Not possible:
- Your oldest child was born before 2016.
- You cannot change your child's name to the other parent's name.

What do I need?

Both parents must bring their passports to the appointment. Foreign passports as well.

Costs

For the eldest child of two parents €75.00; for each subsequent child of the same parents €50.00.
