Bike lights checked at soccer club

Wednesday evening, November 5, at FC Vlotbrug in Hellevoetsluis, the bicycle lights of young athletes were checked. This was done together with BOAs and a bicycle mechanic. The BOA's talked to the youngsters. The bicycle mechanic repaired (free of charge) the bicycle lights of five bicycles during the training of the youngsters.

Alderman Peter Schop of Traffic thinks good bicycle lighting is very important and was also present on Wednesday: "Good lighting is essential for the safety of every road user and certainly for children as well. So parents/caregivers, don't send your child out on the road without proper lighting!"

Recently, the clocks went back one hour and winter time started. This means that many (young) schoolchildren and members of sports clubs cycle to school or the sports complex in the dark. To increase traffic safety, good bicycle lighting is very important. Research has shown that young people and young adults have their lights on proportionally less often than older people.

Like last year, the Municipality of Voorne aan Zee is asking for extra attention to visibility in traffic. We specifically target younger cyclists with the message: turn your lights ON in the dark. The ON in the dark campaign will continue until March 2026. During this campaign period, we work with schools and sports associations to increase traffic safety in the municipality. We check bicycle lights at schools and clubs and engage in a conversation with young people about the importance of good lighting in the dark months.
