Beach Haringvliet with blue-green algae in the water

Blue-green algae has been found at several swimming spots in our municipality. This can be dangerous for humans and animals. Swimming is therefore strongly discouraged.

Why not swim?

Blue-green algae is a bacterium found in stagnant, warm water. Contact or ingestion can cause:

  • Itching, rash, irritated eyes
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, headache
  • Respiratory complaints from inhalation of mist

Note that dogs can also become seriously ill or die from contact with contaminated water.

Stay safe and keep an eye on current warnings and swimming advisories via the Bathing Water website.
